Apple and Google have begun rolling out end-to-end encrypted Rich Communication Services (RCS) messaging in beta, marking a significant shift in cross-platform mobile security. iPhone users running iOS 26.5 and Android users with the latest Google Messages app can now send encrypted messages across platforms without relying on third-party applications. The feature displays a lock icon in RCS conversations to indicate active encryption.
For years, messages between iPhone and Android devices relied on SMS or unencrypted RCS protocols, leaving communications vulnerable as they traveled through carrier infrastructure. While iMessage provided encryption for Apple-to-Apple conversations and Google Messages offered encrypted RCS within its own ecosystem, cross-platform chats remained exposed. This gap persisted despite widespread adoption of encrypted messaging in apps like WhatsApp and Signal.
The new implementation ensures that E2EE RCS messages cannot be intercepted or read while traveling between devices. Apple's support for the standard represents a reversal from its previous stance on cross-platform messaging security. Google had already implemented encrypted RCS within its Messages app, but the feature only worked when both users were on Android devices using Google's services.
The rollout remains in beta status, with carrier support varying significantly by region. UK availability is currently uncertain, as major UK mobile networks do not yet appear on Apple's published compatibility lists. Users in supported regions will need both compatible devices and carrier infrastructure to access the encrypted messaging features.
The timing contrasts with Meta's recent decision to scale back encryption features for Instagram direct messages, citing low adoption rates. Apple's move to support cross-platform E2EE messaging addresses a long-standing security weakness in mobile communications and may pressure other platforms to maintain or expand their encryption offerings. Organizations and security-conscious users should verify carrier support and ensure devices are updated to compatible software versions to take advantage of the new encryption capabilities.
