Arkansas State University will launch a student-operated cybersecurity program this fall through a partnership with Kalmer Solutions. The Red Wolf Security Operations Center will enable students to monitor cybersecurity threats, identify vulnerabilities, and help protect university networks while gaining practical experience in security operations.
Six students each semester will work scheduled shifts as part of the program, applying academic knowledge to real-world scenarios. According to Chris Boothman, a university official, the initiative aims to bridge the gap between theoretical computer science education and practical application skills that employers demand in the cybersecurity field.
Kalmer Solutions will provide mentorship, training, and operational support for the program. The company's involvement extends to financial backing, including funding for a full-time coordinator position and graduate assistant stipends. This partnership model allows the university to offer professional-grade training without bearing the full operational costs.
Beyond network monitoring duties, participating students will access professional development opportunities, workshops, and research projects. These activities will cover emerging areas in cybersecurity, including automation and artificial intelligence applications. The hands-on experience combined with structured learning aims to prepare students for immediate entry into cybersecurity careers.
University officials indicate the program is designed for growth and may eventually expand throughout the Arkansas State University System. This scalability could provide similar training opportunities to students at other campuses within the system, potentially addressing the broader regional need for trained cybersecurity professionals.
