This move comes as the cybersecurity industry experiences rapid growth due to increasing threats to critical infrastructure and a heightened reliance on digital systems across various sectors. The program's expansion is part of EWU's efforts to address the substantial gap between the number of available cybersecurity jobs and the qualified workforce needed to fill them.
The cybersecurity market is valued at hundreds of billions of dollars globally, as organizations invest heavily in protecting sensitive data and maintaining consumer trust. Despite a global cybersecurity workforce of 5 million, including 1.34 million in the United States, there are still over 500,000 job openings in the U.S. alone. In Washington state, there are over 13,000 open positions, highlighting the urgent need for more trained professionals. EWU's cybersecurity program has seen enrollment double for three consecutive cycles, reflecting the growing interest and demand for education in this field.
Technological advancements, particularly in artificial intelligence, are reshaping both cyber threats and defenses. Automated cybercrimes are on the rise, and many higher education institutions, including EWU, are teaching students how to combat these threats using AI. Students are learning to use AI models to filter data streams and detect suspicious activities. EWU's cybersecurity teams have also gained real-world experience by competing in and winning regional cybersecurity competitions, further enhancing their practical skills.
The impact of cyber threats is evident in incidents such as the Colonial Pipeline ransomware attack and a recent attack on a water treatment plant in Minot, North Dakota. These events underscore the need for more cybersecurity professionals to protect public utilities and essential services. EWU's program aims to prepare students to address these challenges by providing hands-on coursework and real-world experience.
To further enhance its program, EWU has been designated as a National Center of Academic Excellence in Cyber Operations by the National Security Agency. This recognition positions EWU as one of only 22 universities nationwide with this designation, signaling its capability to produce graduates ready to tackle sensitive and technically demanding cybersecurity challenges. The university plans to develop a cohort-based model, where students will spend two years on campus before engaging in intensive fieldwork, ensuring they are well-prepared to make a significant impact in the cybersecurity industry.
