A report by the Molly Rose Foundation warns of a global hacking network known as the Com that targets vulnerable children for extreme exploitation and self-harm. This decentralized ecosystem uses gaming and messaging platforms to coerce victims into acts of violence and sexual abuse, prompting urgent calls for international law enforcement intervention.
A prominent online safety charity has issued a public warning regarding a dangerous hacking ecosystem known as the Com, which is increasingly targeting vulnerable children and young adults. The Molly Rose Foundation, established following the death of Molly Russell, collaborated with online risk consultancy Resolver to highlight how these networks facilitate extreme abuse, including sexual exploitation and the encouragement of self-harm. The report describes the Com as a sprawling, decentralized community of teenagers and young adults who share interests in gore, illegal content, and cybercrime while operating across platforms like Discord and Telegram.
The groups within this ecosystem are known to prey on individuals by infiltrating gaming communities and even creating fake support groups for those struggling with eating disorders or mental health issues. Once a victim is identified, members use coercion and psychological manipulation to inflict harm, which in some cases has led to live-streamed acts of violence and suicide. While many participants are motivated by a search for social belonging or online infamy, the results are often devastating, involving "nihilistic violent extremism" and sadistic exploitation that can escalate within hours of initial contact.
Structurally, the Com is divided into three primary categories that frequently overlap: Sadism Com, Terror Com, and Finance Com. Sadism Com focuses on grooming and sexual extortion, while Terror Com promotes extremist ideologies, and Finance Com engages in high-profile hacking against major corporations. This multifaceted nature makes the network particularly difficult to dismantle, as it blends financial crime with severe physical and psychological trauma. The report emphasizes that victims are often chosen for their neurodivergence or economic disadvantage, and in some tragic cycles, victims eventually become perpetrators themselves.
Law enforcement agencies in both the United Kingdom and the United States have begun to track these groups more closely as their influence grows globally, with significant activity noted in Russia, Brazil, and the US. High-profile incidents linked to the network include major retail hacks and criminal convictions for encouraging suicide and possessing terrorist materials. The digital nature of these crimes allows perpetrators to operate across international borders, complicating the efforts of local authorities to protect children who are being groomed in private chat rooms and encrypted spaces.
In response to these findings, safety advocates and government officials are calling for a coordinated global effort involving tech companies, regulators, and police. UK safeguarding minister Jess Phillips has pledged to use every available power to hunt down perpetrators and shut down these networks to protect at-risk youth. The Molly Rose Foundation emphasizes that the speed and severity of the harm caused by the Com represent the most urgent threat to online safety today, requiring a comprehensive shift in how digital platforms are monitored and governed.
