Dutch authorities arrested a forty-year-old man in Ridderkerk after he downloaded confidential police files sent to him by mistake and attempted to extort the department for their deletion. Although the files were sent via an accidental download link, officials maintain that the suspect committed computer trespassing by knowingly accessing and retaining data not intended for him.
The situation originated when the man reached out to law enforcement on February 12 to provide potential evidence for an active investigation. An officer intending to provide a digital portal for the man to submit his images mistakenly sent a link that allowed him to download internal police documents instead. Rather than alerting the authorities to the error, the man proceeded to download the restricted files and ignored subsequent instructions to stop and erase the content.
When the police realized the mistake and demanded the return and deletion of the data, the suspect allegedly refused to comply unless he received something in return for his cooperation. This attempted extortion led to his arrest on Thursday evening at his home on Prinses Beatrixstraat. During the operation, investigators searched the premises and confiscated several data storage devices to ensure the sensitive documents were recovered and removed from his possession.
In an official statement regarding the incident, the Dutch police clarified that utilizing a link for unintended purposes can constitute a criminal offense. They argued that when a person receives a download link in a context where an upload link was expected, the recipient should reasonably understand that the files are not meant for them. Accessing that information anyway, especially after being warned by officials, falls under the legal definition of computer trespassing within the Netherlands.
While the department has reported the data breach to the necessary oversight bodies, they have found no evidence so far that the confidential documents were shared with third parties or published online. The investigation remains active as authorities emphasize that citizens have a legal responsibility to report misdirected sensitive information rather than exploiting technical errors made by government agencies.
