Pax8, a major cloud marketplace provider, recently confirmed that it accidentally emailed a spreadsheet containing sensitive internal business and Microsoft licensing data to a small group of UK partners. The leaked file included information belonging to roughly 1,800 partners, such as customer names and specific license counts, though the company stated the error only reached fewer than 40 recipients.
The incident occurred when an account manager based in the EMEA region sent an email on January 13 intended to discuss business premium upgrade tactics. Attached to this correspondence was a CSV file that was never intended for external distribution. This file contained a variety of internal data points regarding Microsoft programs and pricing structures that the company uses to manage its vast network of managed service providers.
Pax8 has established itself as a massive player in the cloud commerce space, boasting over 47,000 global partners and a workforce of 1,700 employees across 18 countries. Having recently hit a milestone of 2 billion dollars in annual revenue, the company has seen its most significant recent expansion within the European market. This scale makes the accidental release of partner data a notable event for the thousands of businesses that rely on their platform.
According to reports from partners who received the email, the spreadsheet was quite detailed in its scope. It reportedly listed specific organization names of customers served by various MSPs, along with Microsoft stock keeping units and the exact number of licenses held by each entity. Furthermore, the document exposed renewal dates for the Microsoft New Commerce Experience, which is critical competitive information in the IT services industry.
While the data exposure affected approximately 1,800 partners, Pax8 emphasized that the distribution was limited to a very narrow group of fewer than 40 UK-based recipients and one partner in Canada. The company is currently working to manage the fallout of the leak, which centers on sensitive information that could potentially be used by competitors to understand the specific licensing layouts and renewal timelines of various organizations.
