Raspberry Pi has introduced a dedicated Programming Jig priced at $600 to streamline the process of preparing multiple Compute Module 5 (CM5) boards for deployment in embedded systems. The device addresses a common pain point for industrial users who need to provision large quantities of modules with operating systems and security configurations.
The Programming Jig consolidates the provisioning host and module interface into a single 1.8 kg unit, eliminating the need for separate IO boards and complex multi-device setups. Previously, provisioning required connecting each CM5 to a host computer, often through an IO board attached to another Raspberry Pi or PC. While Raspberry Pi's rpi-sb-provisioner software already automated the installation and configuration process, the hardware setup remained cumbersome for batch operations.
Operators configure the jig by writing its operating system and using Raspberry Pi Imager for initial setup. Raspberry Pi recommends using Connect for remote desktop access to upload the images intended for CM5 boards. Once configured, the provisioning workflow becomes straightforward: place a CM5 in the clamp, close the lid, and provisioning begins automatically. A typical installation completes in approximately 90 seconds, with a green status LED indicating when the module is ready for removal.
The single-head design processes one CM5 at a time, making it suitable for organizations deploying moderate to large batches of modules in industrial or embedded applications. The device uses pogo pins to establish connections with the CM5, ensuring reliable contact during the provisioning process without requiring manual cable connections.
Industrial users deploying CM5 modules in embedded systems can now provision boards more efficiently without maintaining separate provisioning stations. The Programming Jig represents a hardware solution to complement existing software automation tools, reducing setup time and potential connection errors during batch deployments. Organizations should evaluate whether the $600 investment makes sense based on their provisioning volume compared to using the less expensive IO board approach for smaller deployments.
