The UK Cyber Security Council has launched a new certification title aimed at supporting individuals at the beginning of their cybersecurity careers. The Associate Cyber Security Professional title is available for applications from April 13 to May 17 and is intended to help bridge the gap for those who have the skills but lack the experience to prove their capabilities to potential employers. This initiative is part of a broader effort to address the cybersecurity skills shortage in the UK and ensure a steady pipeline of qualified professionals in the field.
The introduction of the Associate title comes amid ongoing concerns about the cybersecurity skills gap in the UK. According to the UK government's Cyber Security Skills in the UK Labour Market report, half of UK businesses face a basic cyber-skills gap, and nearly half of cybersecurity firms have struggled to fill technical roles in the past year. Globally, an ISC2 report highlighted that 59% of organizations report critical or significant skills shortages, with a lack of talent and budget constraints being major contributing factors.
To qualify for the Associate Cyber Security Professional title, applicants must demonstrate competence in five key areas. However, those who already possess certain aligned qualifications, training, or certifications can fast-track their applications. This certification places individuals on the UK's Cyber Security Professional Register, indicating their commitment to maintaining their skills through 75 hours of continuing professional development over three years.
The new title is designed to help early-career professionals overcome the 'experience paradox,' where they have the necessary knowledge and skills but lack the practical experience to convince employers of their readiness. The UK Cyber Security Council CEO, Giles Grant, emphasized that the Associate title provides a credible, government-backed way for individuals to demonstrate their readiness for their first cyber role, thereby giving employers confidence in hiring them.
For those interested in pursuing the Associate Cyber Security Professional title, the UK Cyber Security Council encourages applications from individuals who are either ready for or currently working in their first cybersecurity role. This initiative is a significant step towards closing the cybersecurity skills gap and ensuring that the UK has a robust pipeline of cybersecurity professionals to meet future demands.
